Taking your pet cat out for a walk is all the more important if you have an indoor cat. Responsible cat parents know that keeping a cat indoors is essential for prolonging its life and keeping it safe from all kinds of dangers that lurk outside the safety of their humble abode. However, you cannot keep a cat inside forever. You will need to take it out on a walk at regular intervals to keep it healthy.

You should get a leash for your feline friend so that you can control its exuberance and antics when walking it outside. With a leash, you will be able to supervise your cat nicely and ensure its safety.

It might take a little bit of training for your cat to grow accustomed to the leash. Hence, it is best to train your cat while it is still a kitten. Do not force them to do anything if they are unwilling. A little bit of patience can go a long way and soon your cat will enjoy walking with a leash in front of you.

Hide and Seek

Hide and seek is a great game for cats since hunting, exploration and other predatory instincts are hardwired into their DNA.

First, you may have to train your cat to play this game whenever you are ready. You may need clicker training and give out small treats when your cat gets it right. It might take a while but your cat will find out what is going on sooner rather than later. You will then find your feline friend to be an avid player of hide and seek since it is after all a little carnivore and the game is akin to finding prey for food.

Another variation that you can try out is getting a feathered toy or one that looks like a small rodent. Such toys will arouse the predatory instincts in your little carnivorous friend and get it interested. You can attach a small toy mouse to a string and pull it away as your cat pounces on it. Your cat will love playing this game since it is exercising its pouncing skills.

Treasure Hunting

You can hide bits of food or treats in different parts of your home and have your cat seek them all out. Once again, this is much like hunting and not to mention delicious. Your cat will enjoy playing the game and the taste of success.

TV

This might come as a surprise, but cats do enjoy watching TV as some long-time cat parents can attest. You might think that watching TV is excessively passive and impersonal but it does not have to be that way. You can sit with your cat and cuddle it while the show goes on. Thus, it will become more of a bonding session than one that wastes time.

Another great idea is to switch to an animal channel. Your cat will love watching birds, animals and marine life unfold on the TV screen and sit there as if mesmerized. This is not at all unusual since cats love to sit for hours gazing at the birds outside and fish in the aquarium. Come to think of it, you can even get an aquarium so that your cat can gaze at the fish in wonder. Just make sure that the aquarium is secured so that your cat cannot disturb it in any way.

You can get your feline friend catnip stuffed toys in the shape of dragonflies, moths, butterflies and rodents. Cats are drawn to these creatures since they are their natural prey. The catnip ‘addon’ will further pique their curiosity and excitement.

In the rare case that your cat is impervious to the mesmerizing effects of catnip, you can use silvervine which is a natural non-toxic ingredient that has the same effect.

Old Cardboard and Paper Bags

Before tossing away your paper bags and old cardboard, think about giving it to your cat to play with. Paper and cardboard are ideal for playing since cats can scratch and tear at them with ease to amuse themselves

You can even cut holes in cardboard boxes so that your cat can squeeze in and out. Exploration is another one of your furry friend’s wild instincts. Your cat can have an exploration escapade right in the middle of your room.
